Vitiligo is a skin condition where areas of skin lose color. The color is lost because melanocytes (cells that produce pigment) are destroyed. Some patients may develop a few patches while others can lose large areas of color. Vitiligo can affect anywhere we have pigment, therefore hair can develop white patches and other areas such as the eye and the mucous membranes can lose pigment. Vitiligo is not contagious or life threatening. There is treatment for vitiligo. We use medical therapy which includes topical medications and light treatment which have been found to be beneficial. We develop a treatment regimen which is specific to the needs of each patient.
